Staff ‘left with no choice’ as Dundee Airport strikes confirmed

Dundee Airport.

Staff at seven Scottish airports have “been left with no choice” but to strike, according to a union.

Air traffic controllers at Dundee’s terminal will take part in a day of industrial action on Thursday, May 23.

Other airports affected include Inverness, Wick, Kirkwall, Sumburgh, Stornoway, and Benbecula.

Prospect, the union representing air traffic controllers, had called off a strike on April 26 as talks continued with Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL).

Staff have been involved in a pay dispute with the firm since April 2018.

Prospect negotiations officer David Avery said: “Members have run out of patience with HIAL. Talks have been ongoing for more than a year to seek to resolve this dispute but to no avail.

“Prospect agreed to withdraw our strike action in April to allow further talks to take place and members trusted that HIAL would use that time to bring forward proposals to resolve the dispute – HIAL have abused that trust.

“Members do not want to take industrial action but have been left with no choice. If they want to prevent disruption across the highlands on May 23 and throughout the summer then Scottish Ministers need to intervene.”
