A Scots golf fan is on course to raise thousands of pounds for military veterans by walking 50 miles to St Andrews.

Sophie Denholm says she has the drive to cover the distance in two days, taking in two of the country’s best known courses in the process.

All proceeds raised by the Bridge of Allan woman will go to the On Course Foundation, which supports sick and injured veterans through golf.

Sophie will swing into action on September 26 when she will walk from her home town to Gleneagles.

The following day she will head towards Cupar then on to the home of golf, finishing at the Swilcan Bridge on the iconic Old Course.

Sophie has travelled to St Andrews with her parents to watch the Dunhill Cup, cancelled this year due to coronavirus, since she was a toddler.

“I go to St Andrews a lot and spend most of my time there,” she said.

“My dad plays golf mostly every week so I decided to research some golf charities and On Course Foundation kept popping up.

“I did a lot of research on what the charity does and it is really remarkable and inspirational.”

Many have appreciated the Swilcan Bridge, including American golfer Tom Watson..

The On Course Foundation says golf can play a key role in the rehabilitation of injured  veterans, helping to improve balance and co-ordination, while the camaraderie and competitive spirit of the game helps with psychological recovery.

The charity also helps to open doors towards forging a career in the golf industry.

Sophie added: “I’ve watched videos and heard some of the member stories and how this has helped their recovery from their traumatic experience and helped them into employment so they feel valued as indviduals.

“These people have risked their lives for our country and I wanted to give them something back.”

Sophie hopes to raise £3,500 and has set up a Go Fund Me page for anyone who would like to donate.

The charity is delighted with the fundraising drive.

Office and activities manager Anne Farrow said: “We wish Sophie lots of luck with her challenge and all of us here really appreciate her efforts on our behalf.”
