Shock as man holds OAP in their Angus home while co-thief searches for valuables

A pensioner is recovering from a terrifying ordeal after two men claiming to be police officers robbed him in his own home.

Police appealed for witnesses to come forward on Monday after two thieves wearing green jackets forced their way into the disabled 77-year-old’s semi-detached home on Carnoustie’s Primrose Street.

Police said the elderly victim was “left extremely upset” but physically unharmed in the robbery.

A neighbour said one of the thieves, who struck around 8.45pm on Thursday, January 30, held the pensioner in his living room while the other searched the house for valuables.

They eventually left with a bottle of whisky and a mobile phone.

The neighbour said: “I can’t believe something like this happened only a few doors away from me.

“My neighbour is angry but he is ok. He told me he had a sword on his wall and he thought about using it.

“There isn’t usually any kind of bother here. Usually if there were any strangers about then somebody would ask them to see what they were up to.”

Police said the two men claimed to be police officers, forced their way inside the property, and went on to threaten the victim before robbing him.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Wishart at Dundee CID said: “This was a very frightening experience for anyone to endure and it is vital that we trace the two despicable men who carried out this robbery.

“I’d like to speak to anyone who may have either seen the culprits hanging around the area before or after the robbery occurred or anyone who recognises their descriptions.

“Anyone with information should contact CID at Dundee via telephone number 101 quoting incident number 3355 of 30 January, 2020.”

Police said the two culprits were white, aged in their mid-30’s, around 5ft 11 with short dark cropped hair.

One of them was of stocky build and the other was of medium build. Both men were wearing green zipped jackets with a logo on them, the police statement said.

A second neighbour said he was concerned the victim was singled out for the robbery as he had a reputation for “helping people he perhaps should not have helped.”

He is said not to have recognised the two thieves.

The 77-year-old victim was unavailable for comment.
