Queues snaked all the way down the street outside a Dundee bookshop ahead of the midnight release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Children and adults, some dressed as characters from the popular JK Rowling Books, were eagerly anticipating the release of the West End play script, which catches up with Harry 19 years after the events of the Deathly Hallows book.

Julie Thow, manager at Waterstones on Commercial Street, said that the response was bigger than expected, creating a “buzz” around the release.

She explained: “We opened the store at 11pm on Saturday to let the queue of people inside.

“At midnight they were able to buy the book.

“We were remarkably busy – the queue was right outside of the sore and down the street.

“We had more customers than we expected, and on Sunday we opened at 9am for the main launch event, which has also had a great buzz about it.

“We’ve had around 200 kids in store.

“Quite a few have been in costumes – our favourite was a little boy dressed as Dobby, but all the kids really put a lot of effort into their fancy dress.

“They were delighted to get their hands on the book.”
