Police are treating a major blaze at a Dundee toy store as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to Toys R Us in Kingsway West Retail Park shorty after midnight.

Six appliances attended the incident and spent more than two hours battling the fire, which was contained to a storeroom at the back of the shop.

A delivery lorry parked in a loading bay at the rear of the store was also damaged.

Despite the damage, and the lingering smell of smoke, the store opened as normal on Friday morning.

Police have now revealed they are on the hunt for a member of the public spotted in the area at the time of the blaze.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed: “Police Scotland is investigating following a fire at a loading bay at Toys R Us, Kingsway West Retail Park, that happened at about 12.30am.

“Officers are keen to trace a person who was wearing a light coloured hooded top (with the hood up) and dark coloured trousers or jogging bottoms and was seen in the area at the time.

“Damage was caused to the loading bay and a trailer in the incident and smoke damage affected the building.

“Anyone who was in the area at the time and has information that could assist officers with their enquiries is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.

“Alternatively information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Commenting on the fire, a Toys R Us spokeswoman said: “The store is open as normal.

“We were alerted to the fire in the early hours of the morning.

“The fire was contained and was in a store room rather than on the sales floor.

“The damage is minimal and we are carrying out investigations into the cause.”

The store’s manager refused to comment on the blaze, but customers remarked on the “stench” of smoke within the store.

Although there is no obvious visual damage within the shop, both the Toys R Us and Boots shopfronts have been left slightly charred following the blaze.
