A teenager has appeared in court after an alleged attempted robbery in Burntisland which resulted in two shop workers being taken to hospital.

Police were sent to the Co-op store on Burntisland’s High Street following reports it was targeted early on Sunday morning.

It is understood two members of shop staff were taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy following the incident, which happened at around 6.20am as the premises were being opened for the day.

A 16-year-old youth, who cannot be named, was arrested and faces charges of assault and attempted robbery, assault to injury, possession of an offensive weapon and malicious damage.

He appeared in private at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Monday, when no plea was tendered and the case was committed for further examination.

The accused was released on bail.

A date for his next court appearance has yet to be confirmed.

A source said three members of staff were on duty at the Co-op grocery store at the time. The third, who was not taken to hospital, was sent home.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a 16-year-old male youth has been arrested and charged in connection with an attempted robbery within a shop on the High Street in Burntisland.

“The incident happened shortly before 6.30am on Sunday, August 30.”
