A van driver has been taken to hospital after he “passed out at the wheel” and was involved in a crash in Perth.
Emergency services were called after the collision between the glazier’s Renault Master and a Volvo. The van also hit a lorry and narrowly missed another car.
The crash took place around 12 noon on Tay Street, near the Fergusson Gallery.
It is understood that the van had been travelling from Shore Road when it swerved out of control and hit the Volvo, which was travelling in the opposite direction.
Motorist Allan Russell, who narrowly avoided being struck by the van, said the van driver had passed out at the wheel.
The 47-year-old took the stricken man into his own vehicle to await an ambulance.
He said: “I think he’s been ill and passed out at the wheel. He passed us on the left hand side – he was up on the pavement. He then hit the Volvo and the truck. He pulled over and almost hit our car.
“Thank god there was no pedestrians crossing, otherwise he would have killed them.
“I grabbed the keys out of the ignition and got him to stop.
“He doesn’t remember anything. He was still shaking when they took him into the ambulance.
“Hopefully he’s going to be ok”
The driver of the Volvo, who did not want to be named, told of his shock at seeing the van coming towards him.
The man, who had only had the car six weeks, said: “I had nowhere to go. I’m all right but my car isn’t. It’s a Volvo, so it looked after me.”
Charlie MacDonald, director of Aberdeen-based Westend Glass and Glazing, which owns the van, said the driver did not appear to be seriously injured.
He said: “He’s been on the phone to me – he’s sitting up and speaking away.
“They took him to A&E as a precaution and he’s undergoing a couple of tests.
“If he’s released tonight I will drive down to get him.”
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “We attended Tay Street, Perth, after reports of a road traffic collision involving two cars, a truck and van.
“One man has been taken to hospital for treatment.”
