The Greens will not be contesting Westminster seats in Dundee and Angus, its local group has said.
The branch’s leadership said the Prime Minister’s “cynical and opportunistic” calling of a snap election was behind their decision.
It means that SNP candidates in the Nationalist strongholds of Dundee East, Dundee West and Angus will not have a mainstream pro-independence challenger.
Speaking after a meeting of Dundee and Angus Greens, its co-convener Gord Matheson, said they have decided not to field candidates in the three constituencies they cover.
“We did stand candidates in Dundee in 2015, but this is no normal election,” he said.
“The Prime Minister has called this snap election in a cynical and opportunistic attempt to gain a mandate to push through a hard Brexit that we know will be damaging to Scotland.”
Mr Matheson added: “We think this nakedly partisan move is detrimental to our politics and our democracy, and does not reflect the kind of behaviour we wish to see from our politicians in Scotland.”
Caitlin Meldrum, the branch’s co-convener, encouraged Green members and supporters to vote “for the candidate they consider to be closest to our commitments to social, economic and environmental justice, peace, equality, and to ensuring Scotland’s voice is heard”.
Patrick Harvie’s party is also not standing in North East Fife, as revealed in The Courier today, which the Liberal Democrats are hopeful of taking off the SNP.
The Greens have confirmed they will be fielding fewer than 10 candidates in Scotland for the June 8 ballot.
The full list is expected to be published on Thursday.
