Montrose boss Stewart Petrie has now switched his focus from League 2 survival to the possibility of playing in League 1 next season.

The Gable Endies have produced a superb late-season run of form, winning four and drawing one of their last five matches with their latest victory coming a weekend ago when they beat table-topping Forfar 1-0 at Links Park.

That fine form has propelled Montrose up to fifth in the table, just one point behind Elgin City who currently occupy the last play-off position.

Now, Petrie is looking for his side to win again this afternoon when they make the long trip to Berwick to play John Coughlin’s strugglers.

He said: “We can’t hide the fact any longer that we are in with a shout and that’s all credit to the boys and the run they have been on.

“They have now given us an opportunity but we will just approach things one game at a time and see where it takes us.

“Berwick are fighting for their lives at the moment sitting second bottom of the league but John will have them fired up for the game.

“We have a good away record this season but it is important that we come flying out of the traps.

“It is a long journey but we will prepare correctly to begin what we obviously hope is a strong end to the season.”

Callum MacDonald is struggling with injury for the game while Chris Hegarty and Michael Bolochoweckyj are definitely out.

The latter had surgery earlier this week after rupturing his Achilles last Saturday against Forfar.
