LEE WILKIE: Dundee showed they have real mettle at Partick Thistle – now they need to back it up at Dens

Dundee boss Gary Bowyer highlighted the fighting spirit he’d seen in his team lately.

And they proved him right in spades at Partick Thistle on Saturday.

That is a tough, tough thing to do – come from 2-0 down at half-time and win the game.

It takes serious mental strength.

Because it would be easy for any player to let the scoreline and the boos from the away end going in at half-time get to them and to retreat into their shells.

Sometimes you get a goal back before the break and the momentum carries you through.

But there was none of that this time.

Dundee didn’t feel sorry for themselves, though, and that shows the togetherness in that squad.

I can’t begin to explain just how hard that is to do.

Especially at a place like Firhill.

Bowyer boost

Bowyer obviously rallied them at half-time, made changes and got the reaction they needed.

That’s what a manager is there for.

They are judged on results, signings and decisions during games.

It worked wonders.

And I don’t doubt it will give him a bit of a confidence boost as well.

That result is a boost for everyone associated with the club – manager, players and fans.

They’ve shown they have the bottle and fight to get out of trouble against a good team.

It was a massive win for the Dark Blues, too.

Cammy Kerr

The players will be feeling great after it.

I’m delighted it was Cammy Kerr who scored the winner. He’s a player who gives his all for the team and sometimes gets some stick so it was good to see him on target.

His celebration, though, maybe shows he doesn’t score often!

And there will be real belief among the players going forward plus there’s the added bonus of sticking one to Partick Thistle psychologically.

It could have been Dundee down in seventh if they hadn’t turned things around.

But they showed their mettle and gave the away support a real day to remember.

Home crowd

I still think the home crowd needs a bit of convincing, though.

It’s no use picking up a big win like that and then not following it up.

They have some momentum behind them but another victory this weekend would see them really moving.

Raith Rovers have been in fine form themselves lately and are above Dundee in the table now on goal difference.

The division is so tight, getting back-to-back wins over Partick Thistle and Raith makes such a big difference because there is nothing between the teams.

All the games in the next wee while are massive.

But two home games on the back of that win at Firhill, you couldn’t ask for a better opportunity.

Putting together that run they need in front of the home crowd would see them flying into the festive period.
