Dumbarton 0 Raith Rovers 0: Boss Gary Locke not “overly worried” despite another goalless draw

Raith Rovers boss Gary Locke is not too concerned by the team's recent dry patch after the Kirkcaldy men battled out their third goalless draw in five games.

Rovers have only found the net once in the past three fixtures since scoring four on the road at Falkirk but, after another uninspired display in Dumbarton, Locke insisted the goals will return.

"We're certainly defending well and keeping clean sheets but I'd like to see us being a threat at the other end," he said.

"Our decision making in the final third was a wee bit disappointing but if we brush up on that we won't be far away.

"Obviously we'd like to do a bit better but I'm not overly worried because we have scored quite a few goals this season.

"It's a difficult place to come so keeping a clean sheet is a positive."

After an evenly contested first half, Raith had to defend resolutely and rely on Kevin Cuthbert to make some key saves as Dumbarton dominated the second 45.

"Kev made some good saves, that's what he's there for, but we're defending as a team – it's not just Kev and the back four," Locke added.

"You've got to do that when you come away from home.

"Dumbarton have had a good home record and we don't have any divine to come away from home and win games.

"It was a hard game and the pitch was heavy so it was difficult to move the ball quickly.

"But we've kept a clean sheet, got a point, and if we win at home to Ayr on Tuesday it's a very good week for us."

One bright spot for Raith was the performance of substitute Joel Coustrain who provided a much needed spark from the bench in his first appearance since September.

"We're trying to protect the young lads," Locke said.

"He's come in and his body has struggled a wee bit to adapt to the rigours of first team football.

"He's had a few niggling injuries but he's now fitter and a bit stronger, and he went on and did really well."

Both sides had chances in a frantic opening 20 minutes with Raith forwards Mark Stewart and Declan McManus both guilty of slack finishing after being played into good positions in the box.

Both had clear shooting opportunities from the middle of the box but neither connected properly with the ball and goalkeeper Alan Martin was able to make comfortable saves.

At the other end, a mistake from Jean-Yves M'voto allowed Robert Thomson through on goal, who rounded Cuthbert and seemed set to score until M'voto recovered superbly to make a goal-saving block.

After the break, the home side stepped up a gear and Cuthbert had to make a block at his near post to deny Donald McCallum, just minutes after saving with his legs from Thomson's 20-yard blast.

It was a tough spell for Rovers as they struggled to get out of their half and only a vital point-blank stop from Cuthbert prevented them falling behind.

Davidson was caught too deep playing both Dumbarton strikers onside but the 'keeper came to the rescue to save superbly at the feet of Thomson.

Rovers improved in the closing stages after the introduction of Coustrain from the bench but they were unable to carve out an opening to steal the three points.

Raith return to action tomorrow night with Ayr United visiting Stark's Park.
