St Johnstone midfielder confident home form will improve

The St Johnstone players are determined to raise their home results up to the lofty heights of their away ones, according to Blair Alston.

But he has no doubts that the Perth men will start to get it right at McDiarmid Park as well as on their travels – hopefully starting with Ross County on Saturday.

Twelve of Saints’ 19 league points have been won away and Alston admitted: “It’s unusual for a team to be better away from home but that has been the case for us.”

The midfielder added: “We know the home form will turn around for us, it’s what we need to sort out.

“We are confident and capable of doing that.

“It’s a hard one to figure out but maybe teams are sitting in more against us these days.

“I think we are a better team when we’re playing against a team who comes out at us and tries to play.

“But I’ve felt that sometimes here we have struggled to break teams down when they’ve sat a bit deeper.

“So that’s something we need to figure out and work our way around.

“But we are good enough to do it, I think we can take the game to teams and win matches that way.

“We have players capable of unlocking teams.

“If we go ahead in a game I think we always have a good chance because we can see it out.

“We can play football, we’re direct when we have to be but we can score good goals like the one against Partick Thistle the other week.

“So the confidence is there, the lads know our home form will turn around and hopefully we can start that this weekend.”

The high point of Alston’s short Saints career was a spectacular strike against Rangers a few weeks ago.

He earned a reputation as a regular goal-scorer with the Bairns and he doesn’t want to give that up.

“The goal at Ibrox helps because getting your first goal is massive,” he said.

“I had put myself under a wee bit of pressure because last season was very good for me in front of goal.

“I always knew it would be tougher stepping up into the Premiership so double figures again was going to be more difficult.

“But Danny Swanson has shown it can be done so now I’m off the mark hopefully I can add a few more.

“But more importantly than me scoring, to go to Ibrox and play the way we did showed us we’re good enough to do that.

“We came away from that game with confidence because we know on our day we can match anyone.”

Saturday’s opponents may be bottom of the league but Alston believes their last display is a better gauge of what Saints can expect than their Premiership standing.

He said: “Ross County will make it tough for us. There are no easy games in this league.

“They played well against Rangers in their last match before the international break so their confidence will be good.

“They will be disappointed where they are in the league right now because they have a top six squad.

“They have a lot of good players but the league is so tight that one or two wins makes all the difference.

“Look at Dundee, they looked in trouble a few weeks ago but they got back to back wins and things look much better for them.

“It’s a crazy league from that point of view, a couple of good results makes all the difference.

“County will pick them up we just have to hope that it’s not against us this weekend.

“And our focus is just on getting the amount of points we need to make sure we’re not involved in any of that down there.”
