More than 1,500 school pupils across Fife will take part in an employability programme delivered by local firms.

Hand Picked is designed by home improvements firm CR Smith to build bridges between the classroom and businesses.

The six-week programme takes S4-S6 pupils through recruitment processes and job seeking skills including CV writing, cover letters and interviews.

It is supported by Developing the Young Workforce Fife.

Hand Picked is currently running at Auchmuty, Lochgelly and Queen Anne High Schools.

It will run at Balwearie, Glenrothes and Dunfermline High Schools later in the year.

Jobs skills have ‘real impact’ on Fife pupils

Hand Picked project manager Pauline McGeevor said: “We are able to have a real impact on the pupils we connect with.

“We help them understand what employers look for when recruiting new staff, and giving them the confidence to go after the jobs they want.”

13 companies based in Fife support the scheme to give real life insights.

CR Smith founder Gerard Eadie has previously made a passionate appeal for more local firms to get involved.

Pauline adds: “All our volunteer employers work with our lesson plans.

“They are trained on the material, but each brings their own unique experience and realities of working in business to the class.

“We know that meeting employers whilst at school can have a transformative impact for the young people.

“It is also a tremendous way for businesses to support their local community and I would encourage more companies to get involved.”

Lochgelly High School teacher Adam Jackson said: “Every S5 pupil has had the opportunity to learn direct from employers.

“Our young people benefit greatly from these key skills.

“They also get the chance to interact with an employer and learn more around the expectations of the world of work.”
