Couple believe yobs torched their car and motorbike by using petrol

A couple whose car was totally destroyed in what’s believed to have been an arson attack have appealed for information on the culprits.

Sarah Byers and William Dick’s white Seat Leon was burnt out after the motorbike next to it was apparently set on fire.

The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the cause of the blaze and treating it as suspicious.

Sarah, 34, a school teacher, said the couple were wakened in the early hours of the morning with people shouting outside.

The burnt-out remains of the car and motorbike which were both destroyed by the fire.

She said: “Then we heard a very loud bang.

“My husband ran to look outside where he saw flames and smoke.

“We were horrified when we realised our car was well ablaze.

“I phoned the fire brigade and the police but other people had already done it.”

Sarah said she believed that petrol had been poured on and around the bike on purpose before being set on fire.

She said: “The bike is totally destroyed and the flames spread to our car and destroyed it as well.

“We have spoken to the bike’s owner, Joe Stewart, and together we are appealing for any information that could lead the police to whoever did this.

“We are all very upset and angry. I need my car to get to work as I travel around schools and nurseries all over Angus.’’

William, 39, a vehicle assessor, said he was shocked at the extent of the damage to the bike and car: “They are both a complete write-off.”

Writing on social media, Joe said he wanted someone to come forward with information about the fire and how it started.

The destroyed motorbike

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “We attended a car parking area in Rosefield Place, Arbroath, about 3.30am on Tuesday along with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in response to a report of a motorcycle on fire.

“It had also spread to a white Seat car parked next to it.

“The fire was extinguished, and is being treated as suspicious.

“Inquiries are at an early stage.”
