Provost Helen Oswald formally handed over Pitskelly Park and its facilities to Carnoustie Panmure Football Club on Wednesday night.
The community asset transfer was agreed by Angus Council’s communities committee earlier this year.
It will see the club lease the all-weather pitches and adjacent changing rooms for a nominal sum — £1 — with an option to buy the facilities in the future.
One of Panmure’s community projects in Carnoustie, the development of two training pitches at Balmachie, has been delayed due to the recent discovery of a Bronze Age settlement with Iron Age buildings adjacent.
The dig, beside Carnoustie High School, is already uncovering evidence about life north of the Tay before records began.
Mrs Oswald said: “This is great news for the town and everyone associated with Carnoustie Panmure FC.
“The club plays a vital role in the promotion, support and development of sport in Carnoustie and beyond and I am certain this asset transfer will be of enormous benefit to our community.”
Those future plans, which have overwhelming local support, include the upgrading of the all-weather facilities to include a 3G surface with shock pad, which increases the playability and safety of an artificial turf pitch and enhances its lifespan.
Carnoustie Panmure Football Club is a community sports club and registered Scottish charity, with a proven track record of promoting sport across the ages in the area.
It has 22 teams and almost 500 players aged between five and 45 years old.
Following the community asset transfer, the “Gowfers” plan to introduce an over-35s team, walking football for pensioners, and also lower the minimum age for the youngest players to three years.
Other plans in the making are a midnight league for teenagers as a crime reduction measure and sessions for disabled groups with fully qualified coaches.
