Mother and son in court over Dundee common close brawl

The fight happened on Dundee's Provost Road.
The fight happened on Dundee's Provost Road.

A woman was punched and kicked on the head by her neighbour’s son following a blazing row in the common close.

Topless Daniel Blair also headbutted June Wallace during the heated incident on Dundee’s Provost Road earlier this year.

Dundee Sheriff Court was told how the 28-year-old thug saw red after believing his mother, Sarah Jane Blair, had been assaulted during the argument with Ms Wallace, her daughter and another man.

The incident started after Ms Blair, 47, began drunkenly banging on Ms Wallace’s front door, before returning to her home and sending a threatening text.

Matters turned violent after Ms Wallace arrived at Ms Blair’s address with her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend.

Daniel Blair punched victim to the ground

Fiscal depute Gavin Burton said: “The accused Sarah Blair came to the door and was aggressive.

“At that time, Daniel Blair attended and threatened violence towards the complainers.

“He shouted ‘I’m going to punch your puss’.

“As a result of the threats of violence, June Wallace attempted to usher Sarah Blair back into her address.”

Mr Burton added: “Upon seeing this, Daniel Blair came into the common close and headbutted June Wallace once to the forehead.

“He then repeatedly punched her on the head, with one of the punches contacting her nose causing it to bleed.

“She then fell to the ground and Daniel Blair kicked her once on the head.”

“Police attended and arrested Daniel Blair while Sarah Blair continued to shout and swear in front of the officers.

“Paramedics were also called to the scene but Ms Wallace did not require further treatment after suffering from tissue damage to her nose and a small lump on her forehead.”

‘Alcohol had been taken’

Daniel Blair, a prisoner of HMP Perth, admitted shouting, swearing and making threats of violence on January 27 on Provost Road before headbutting Ms Wallace, repeatedly punching her and kicking her on the head.

Sarah Blair, of Provost Road, pled guilty to banging on Ms Wallace’s door, shouting, swearing and sending a threatening text message before repeatedly shouting and swearing in front of police officers and refusing to desist.

Solicitor Anika Jethwa, representing Daniel Blair, said her client was under the belief his mother had been assaulted before he became involved in the dispute.

She told Sheriff Paul Brown: “He had been staying with his mother and he heard there had been a problem with the neighbour over the Christmas and new year period.

“Alcohol had been taken by him, he was wearing just shorts and no footwear and could hear there was noise coming from the hallway.

“He was going out to get his mother to come back in.

“His understanding was someone had struck his mother and as a consequence of that, he saw red.”

Ms Blair’s solicitor, Paul Parker-Smith, opted to reserve mitigation until the preparation of reports.

Sentence was deferred on both Blairs until next month.
