Dundee United’s sporting director Tony Asghar could be banned from driving after he was clocked speeding in his £65,000 Range Rover.

Asghar has been ordered to attend court in person after failing to turn up for trial today.

His lawyer submitted a letter pleading guilty on his behalf and the former police officer was told to come to court in person next month for sentencing.

Dundee’s Justice of the Peace Court was told Asghar already has six live penalty points on his driving licence and could be banned from the road if the same amount is imposed on his licence for this offence.

Plea change on day of trial

The court’s clerk said: “There is a letter from his solicitor apologising for not being able to be here but pleading guilty on his behalf.

“There is a DVLA printout showing he had six live points at the time.”

Fiscal depute Emma Farmer accepted the guilty plea on behalf of the Crown and submitted a copy of Asghar’s criminal record to the court.

The Justice of the Peace noted Asghar had been ordered to appear for a scheduled trial and said he should turn up to be sentenced in a month’s time.

The retired police officer had previously appeared in the court and indicated he planned to challenge the accuracy of the device the police used to record him speeding.

At that stage, Asghar had denied speeding on the A919 in Fife on February 2 2021 but he changed his position to admit the offence on Monday.

The Tannadice director admitted driving at 45mph on a stretch of the St Michael’s to Leuchars road, which has a 30mph limit.

Asghar, 53, from Bearsden, admitted speeding at 50% above the limit on a stretch of the A919 near its junction with the A914.

Asghar, who attended a Manchester university and was involved in sports management after leaving the police, is a senior management figure at the Premiership club.
