A drunken thug hurled homophobic abuse at an emergency department nurse on one of the busiest days of the festive calendar.

Shaun McNair, 20, was brought into Ninewells, drunk, in the early hours of Friday December 23.

The last Friday before Christmas Eve — often referred as Black-eye Friday — is one of the busiest of the year for emergency services.

MacNair spent the Christmas period in jail after being arrested.

Horrific abuse of staff

Dundee Sheriff Court heard McNair was acting in a threatening and abusive manner in the ward, forcing medical staff to call for police support.

Depute fiscal Emma Farmer told the court: “He was taken to Ninewells A&E.

“At 4:15am police received a call.

“McNair had been brought in 30 minutes before due to substance intoxication.

Ninewells Hospital.

“Staff requested police to attend.

“When they arrived the accused called them ‘d***heads’ and ‘w*****s’ and ‘c***s’.

“When a nurse tried to asses whether he was fit to be discharged from the department he referred to her as a ‘f***ing fat dyke’.

“This was overheard by constables.

“He was cautioned, charged and continued to shout and swear at officers.”

‘Entrenched reliance on alcohol’

Defence solicitor David Duncan, in mitigation for McNair, said: “There is a report from December.

“That report discusses the prospect of him attending a residential rehabilitation centre.

“His mother is present in court today – she stopped me to say the rehabilitation programme had been in contact while he was in custody.

“That’s what the hope is.

“He has an entrenched reliance on alcohol.”

Sheriff George Way deferred sentence for a day and granted McNair bail to allow him to show up on time for other matters.

As part of his release conditions, MacNair, of Spey Drive, has to appear no later than 9:25am on Thursday December 29, when other matters are calling.
