A city centre takeaway restaurant owner has asked the public for help to trace a thief who took off with a charity tin and till in an afternoon raid.

The brazen thief, who concealed his face with a mask, was caught on CCTV as he broke into Scran Fitness Food in Nethergate on April 27 between 1.50pm and 2.20pm.

The footage, shared on the company’s social media, shows the culprit break into the store to steal the till after failing to retrieve the cash inside.

It is understood there was around £100 inside.

He then returned for the charity tin, which had been collecting donations for Broughty Ferry RNLI for more than a year.

Staff remain hopeful of catching the culprit thanks to CCTV footage for neighbouring businesses which captured the thief unmasked.

Store owner Jason Myles said he shared the experience on social media to help prevent other businesses being targeted.

He said: “With everything going on at the moment, it’s the last thing we needed.

“We have been shut for almost five weeks so we’ve already had a massive loss in revenue so it’s a bit frustrating.

“We are lucky that not too much was stolen from our till as we just keep cash float inside so it was roughly £100.

“It could have been a lot worse and especially with businesses and charities struggling under coronavirus conditions, it could ruin someone.

“We’re disappointed they stole the charity tin though as we had been collecting that for well over a year now.

“We wanted to share what happened to us to warn other businesses to be aware in case it happens to them.”

Scran Fitness Food have instead pledged to help the RNLI charity by donating £1 from every order made to their meal prep delivery service.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a break-in at a business premises in Nethergate, Dundee, which happened on Monday, 27 April.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
