Perth Road has been short-listed for a prestigious award celebrating the best urban spaces in Britain.

The West End street is one of 10 streets in the running for The Academy of Urbanism’s Urban Awards 2017 thanks to its vibrant mix of pubs, independent shops and restaurants.

The Academy of Urbanism is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that aims to celebrate the best urban spaces in the UK and Europe.

Each year it selects 50 places for its Urban Awards, across five different categories: European City of the Year, The Great Town, The Great Neighbourhood, The Great Street and The Great Place.

In The Great Street category, Perth Road is up against streets including Lark Lane in Liverpool and Wood Lane in London.

The only other Scottish nominees for the awards are Footdee in Aberdeen in The Great Neighbourhood Category and Summerhall in Edinburgh in The Great Place category.

The 50 places will be whittled down to three finalists from each category at the on Wednesday, April 27 and the overall winners announced at the Urbanism Awards in November.

Dundee West MP Chris Law said: “Perth Road has some fantastic independent shops, restaurants and cafes and it’s great that it has been short-listed for an award.

“It’s my local shopping area and has a real sense of community and friendship.

“It has an interesting mix of people – students, artists, and trades men and women of all sorts.

“It doesn’t matter what time of the day or night I walk along there I can guarantee I will meet someone and have a chat or a coffee with them. Fingers crossed for good news when the awards are announced.”

West End councillor Fraser Macpherson added: “I am delighted to see Perth Road being selected as one of the 50 finalists for The Urbanism Awards 2017 and being recognised as one of the top 10 ‘Great Streets’.

“One of Dundee’s longest streets, Perth Road has great history and character with a fascinating mix of residential, retail and cultural settings.

“It is great to see the Perth Road being recognised in this way and I do hope it wins its category.”

Last year The Great Street award went to Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork.

San Sebastián in Spain, was crowned European City of the Year  for its commitment to reducing inequality across the city, as well as its success in using culture as a means to promote a peaceful, post-conflict environment.
