Colourful pictures chosen by local school pupils to brighten up Tayside Children’s Hospital

Colourful pictures will be placed on the ceiling across the new Tayside Children’s Hospital to cheer up young people.

The skypanels feature astronauts, kites, hot air balloons and animals and it is hoped they will act as a distraction during treatment.

The 15 pictures will be strategically placed across the new facility at places where patients will be looking at the ceiling.

A skypanel design

RDA Architects, which has been designing the £9 million Ninewells unit, created a range of panels, which were narrowed down to a final 15 by local schoolchildren and Downfield Scout Group.

NHS Tayside chief executive Grant Archibald said: “The environment for the new children’s theatre suite has been developed to be as young person friendly as possible and I am delighted that young people have been able to play a key role in the completed facility.

“We have had to think a little bit differently as to how we could involve young people this year due to the restrictions of Covid-19.

“Their contribution ensures that young people continue to be at the heart of this new facility.”

The skypanels will be placed above each of the 10 beds in the ward area, as well as in the corridor and anaesthetic rooms.

The new unit, will see all paediatric services moved to the same floor, as well as the creation of a twin operating theatre.

It has been supported by children’s charity the Archie Foundation.

Chairman Joe Mackie said: “Support from the local community in fundraising to make the difference for Tayside Children’s Hospital has been, and continues to be, outstanding.

“Staff, volunteers and everyone who has contributed to Archie’s capital appeal are all so excited to see the project coming to fruition and we really feel honoured to be part of this exciting development for NHS Tayside.”

More than 100 children took part in the final vote, as well as members of the facility’s project design team.
