A second staff member at a council-run Dundee nursery has tested positive for Covid-19.

Health chiefs have also confirmed two positive cases in staff connected to a city medical practice.

NHS Tayside confirmed the developments on Tuesday, following an initial weekend announcement that an employee at the Jessie Porter Nursery  had contracted the virus.

The Princes Street Surgery is the GP practice where the other positive cases have been confirmed but patients registered there have been assured it will remain open.

The Harestane Road nursery is currently closed due to the holiday period.

Close contacts have been advised to self-isolate but health chiefs have delivered an assurance to families who have not already been contacted in connection with the cases that they can continue other activities.

Dr Ellie Hothersall, consultant in public health medicine, said: “NHS Tayside, Dundee City Council and partners have been working closely to investigate this case.

“This means that there are two positive adult cases at the nursery.

“All close contacts of both cases have been identified have been advised to self-isolate. Those staff and children identified as close contacts are to self-isolate for the appropriate period.”

She added: “I would like to thank everyone who has been self-isolating and I would also like to reassure parents that if you have not been contacted individually this means that your child has not been identified as a contact at the nursery, and they can undertake other activities as normal.

“It is very important that all close contacts identified remain at home and that they do not mix with any other households.”

The head teacher has contacted all parents directly to inform them and to provide them with an update on the situation.

Dundee City Council chief education officer, Audrey May, said: “We are working closely with NHS Tayside’s health protection team and I would reassure families that appropriate action is being taken.”

The two other cases are linked to Princes Street Surgery in Dundee.

Interim Director of Public Health, Dr Emma Fletcher said all close contacts in the surgery have been identified and have been advised to self-isolate for 14 days.

“The surgery remains open and there are no concerns about risk to patients and the wider public,” she added.

Dr Michelle Duncan, senior partner at Princes Street Surgery, said, “There will be a temporary reduction in the services offered at Princes Street Surgery for the next two weeks and we thank patients for their understanding during this time.

“Patients should be reassured that it is safe to attend the surgery if you are asked to do so.”
