Police have launched an investigation after thieves ransacked a Dundee takeaway before fleeing with cash, power tools and CCTV equipment.

More than £1,000 was stolen during the incident at Karachi Tandoori on Blackness Road overnight, between Monday and Tuesday.

Forensics officers have been to the scene to analyse the area for prints, and have also been seen placing drill bits into evidence bags.

Owner Tahir Yunus says police went to his door on Tuesday morning to say his premises had been targeted.

Power tools and CCTV equipment stolen

He told The Courier: “At least £1,000 has been taken from the float in the till and other monies at the shop.

“We left the shop at around 11pm on Monday and then police contacted me on Tuesday.

“The people responsible have also broken into the office at the back of the premises before that got turned over.

“Power tools were stolen, including a Dewalt drill, and the CCTV unit was also taken during the incident.”

‘We’ve been unlucky’ – Karachi Tandoori owner

Tahir says he has had the outlet for about 20 years, and it was previously targeted around a decade ago.

He added: “I think we’ve been unlucky here in all honestly, it is disheartening.

“The tools were worth around £600 and the CCTV equipment is probably worth around £500 as well.

“We’ll speak to the other business premises to see if they’ve maybe captured anything on CCTV.

“The police have taken a statement and have been here from around 7.30am checking the scene out for prints.”

Police officers at the scene.

One customer on his way to work on Tuesday said he was “disgusted” that Karachi Tandoori had been targeted.

He said: “I saw the forensics officer dusting the door down for prints this morning and police were making inquiries locally.

“I feel for the owner, they’ve had that business for years and I’m disgusted that this has happened to his store.

“Hopefully they’ll catch the people responsible. It’s such a busy road and there are a lot of students living around here – you’d think someone might have seen something.”

Inquiries ‘at an early stage’

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “We received a report of a break-in and theft from a premises on Blackness Road, Dundee, at around 6.45am on Tuesday.

“The break-in is believed to have occurred between 11.15pm on Monday and 7am on Tuesday.

“A four-figure sum of cash and tools with and estimated value of £1,000 have been reported as stolen.

“Inquiries are at an early stage and ongoing.”
