Broughty Ferry pub floods just three weeks after new owners take over

The new owners of the Occidental bar in Broughty Ferry are counting the cost after flooding during overnight storms.

Stacy and Scott Townsend only took over the Queen Street pub three weeks ago but woke up to their cellar flooded and no electricity.

Water poured down the street in the early hours of Monday morning, as Tayside and Fife was battered by thunderstorms.

Queen Street is regularly hit by flooding, particularly at the corner of Claypotts Road.

The same pub was hit last summer, under previous owners.

Stacy said: “Where we live the rain didn’t seem so bad.

“We got a text at 8am alerting us to what was happening at the bar.

“When we got here we found the cellar flooded and the electricity had gone off.

“Fortunately the bars themselves are not flooded.

Road workers clear floodwater on Monday morning.

Stacy added: “We’re just going to have to wait and see later what we are going to have to do.

This is disappointing and upsetting for us having only taken over the pub just three weeks ago.”

A weather warning remains in place until midnight.

Broughty Ferry residents say flood water was ‘up to their knees’

Mother and daughter Elaine and Louise Ireland, who live next to the pub, have also suffered flooding in previous storms.

Last year they had to replace carpets and other belongings.

This time they managed to put sandbags out early enough to protect their home.

Elaine said: “It was so strong Queen Street itself was like a river with the bins floating away down the road.

“We were so worried our house was going to be flooded again.

“Fortunately we managed to get sandbags out in time to stop the water coming into the house.

“I went outside and the water was up to my knees.

“It was pouring down the street and through the gate to the door of our house.”
