Councillors urged to approve new Dundee care home despite 20 objections

Councillors are being urged to approve plans for a new 60-bed care home in Dundee’s West End despite 20 objections.

Care operator Simply UK is behind the Perth Road development, which would include a cinema, hair salon and piano bar.

The plans, which will go before the city’s councillors on Monday, have been recommended for approval by council planning officials.

They were initially set to go before councillors on September 12, but the meeting was delayed due to the Queen’s death on September 8.

What objections have been lodged over Dundee care home?

Members of the public raised a series of concerns including:

  • Insufficient cycle facilities provided for staff and visitors
  • Detrimental impact on wildlife including bats and loss of trees
  • Noise and light pollution
  • Increases flood risk
  • Scale of the development
  • Overlooking and overshadowing of surrounding houses and garden ground
  • Safety of access site on Perth Road
  • Boundary and land ownership
  • Car park capacity
  • Sewer capacity

But according to Dundee City Council‘s planning officials, there are no “sufficient” reasons to refuse permission.

A report from officers states: “The proposal is in accordance with the development plan.

“There are no material considerations of sufficient weight to justify refusal of planning permission.

“It is therefore recommended that planning permission be approved subject to conditions.”

The care home, which would be operated by sister firm Morar Living, would be built on the site of the former Blackness Nursery.

The plot has lain empty for more than 20 years and is located on the south side of Perth Road, just west of Dundee University Botanic Gardens.

The care home would be sub-divided into six separate compartments, each with 10 en-suite bedrooms, a quiet lounge and a lounge/dining room.
