Bowlers in Dundee have hit out at the city’s bowling association over its “outdated” men-only awards dinner policy.

The City of Dundee Bowling Association was due to host its annual prize-giving dinner in Craigie Bowling Club next month.

But The Courier understands the Craigie club cancelled after learning its female president would not be allowed to attend the event.

It has now been reorganised at Hillcrest Bowling Club on November 11, but guests will not be treated to the usual dinner.

It is understood a special meeting of the association has also been called to discuss the rule after outrage among club members online.

James Westwater, the association’s junior vice-president, said in a social media post: “The committee want to discuss all that has happened lately with the lady president not being allowed to the dinner presentation of awards.”

Locals call for change

One man who plays in the city blasted the “outdated” policy of only allowing men to attend.

Speaking anonymously he said: “It’s 2022, it really is time these outdated traditions were forgotten.

“We want to encourage the next generation to take part but this doesn’t attract anyone.”

The City of Dundee Bowling Association and Bowls Scotland, the sport’s governing body, were approached for comment.

‘Serious error in judgement’

North east Labour MSP Mercedes Villalba said the association risks “irreparable damage” if it does not change course.

She told The Courier: “Bans on women attending sporting events should be consigned to the history books.

“Whoever made this call has made a serious error in judgement and it is now incumbent on every single member of City of Dundee Bowling Association to object to this outdated decision or risk irreparable damage to the association in their name.”
