A Dundee teenager who won the Young Scot Awards has told of her joy at meeting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle when they visited Edinburgh earlier in the week.
Chelsea Cameron won the 2017 Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards and the Young Hero Award after a heartfelt letter she penned to her drug addict parents went viral.
Despite her difficult upbringing, the 19-year-old became Head Girl at the former Menzieshill High School, volunteered in Uganda, helped the Rotary Club and recently went on to live independently and take part in work experience.
She said meeting Harry and his American fiancee Meghan, who both congratulated her on her awards, “topped off” a year of meeting “amazing” people.
Chelsea said: “It was all very informal.
“There were a lot of young people and their ambassadors there, with it being the year of Young People.
“We were standing in clusters and Harry and Meghan went around them all.
“Everybody got to introduce themselves and talk a bit about their achievements.
“The CEO of Young Scot introduced me and Meghan and Harry said ‘well done’ on my achievements, and that they hope I continue to inspire the young people of Scotland.
“It was really nice, and great to meet them.
“I’ve been so fortunate this year to meet so many amazing people, but this really topped it off.”
The visit took place at Edinburgh Castle, with crowds queuing up outside for hours to get a glimpse of the couple.
Markle wore a Black Watch tartan coat, one of the checked fabrics associated with Scottish traditional dress.
Harry, 33, and Markle, 36, were officially welcomed to the city by the Royal Marines Scotland Band at the castle, where they observed the firing of the one o’clock gun, a tradition that dates back to 1861.
They were also visiting Social Bite, a charity that runs cafes and distributes food to the homeless, as well as employing staff who have been homeless.
