Investigations are continuing into the mystery death of a guest at a Fife hotel.
A tent was erected outside Drummonds Hotel, in Markinch, on Thursday as the police inquiry into the man’s death entered a second day.
The screen was thrown up around the rear of the building in Betson Street, which remained cordoned off to the public while detectives went about their work.
It is understood the man was found in a fire escape stairwell on Wednesday.
The area which has been sealed off is around the kitchen at the back of the venue in Balbirnie Street.
A Police Scotland spokesman said on Thursday: “The death remains unexplained and our inquiries are continuing.”
The hotel’s owners and the franchise group OYO closed the premises for a week after news of the tragedy emerged.
Guests have been relocated to alternative accommodation and bookings have been cancelled.
It’s not clear when the hotel will reopen, although there is a suggestion that it could be back in business sooner depending on the progress of the inquiry.
Following the grim discovery by a member of staff on Wednesday morning, residents reported seeing several police cars and an ambulance descending on the location.
The ambulance left a short while later.
Neighbours in Betson Street were asked by police officers if they had CCTV footage which might aid the probe.
Inspector Rachael Burns, of Glenrothes Police Station, said: “Officers were called to an address on Balbirnie Street, Markinch, on Wednesday November 20 following the sudden death of a man.”
Drummonds Hotel, previously known as the Laurel Bank Hotel, was recently taken over by head chef Declan Howard and a franchise agreement was entered into with OYO.
A spokeswoman for OYO said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by what has happened and offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this guest.
“We are assisting the authorities however we can with their investigation and are also doing everything possible to support hotel staff.”
Anyone with information is urged to call Police Scotland on 101.
