A 26-year-old man has been charged after an image mocking the death of George Floyd was posted online.
The man, believed to be from Cupar, was arrested on Wednesday and police confirmed he would appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Thursday.
The charge relates to communications offences after the image was circulated on social media earlier this week.
Complaints were made to police on Tuesday after it was shared hundreds of times.
A police spokesman said: “Officers in Fife have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with an image relating to the death of George Floyd in the United States which has been circulating on social media.
“This was reported to Police Scotland on Tuesday June 2.
“The man has now been charged and is due at Dundee Sheriff Court on Thursday June 4.”
George Floyd, an unarmed black man, died on a street in Minneapolis in the United States when a white police officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes during an arrest.
The officer has been charged with second degree murder, upgraded from an initial charge of third degree murder, and the three other officers who were present are facing charges of of aiding and abetting murder. The incident has also sparked huge protests across world.
Mr Floyd’s death has placed renewed focus on race relations in the US and elsewhere.
Four officers involved in his death have been sacked and days of looting and arson in the Minnesota city have boiled over into nationwide protests.
Mr Floyd was arrested after being accused of trying to pass a counterfeit $20 bill.
Police said he resisted arrest.
