Police are hunting a driver who was filmed travelling the wrong way on a notorious Fife road into the path of oncoming traffic.
The incident happened on the A92 dual carriageway between Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly.
Dramatic footage captured by other motorists’ dashcams showed the vehicle going the wrong way down a slip road.
Another driver filmed the car slowly making its way along the highway’s outside lane, tight alongside the central reservation as vehicles of varying sizes headed towards it at speeds of up to 70mph.
No one was injured in the drama, which happened shortly before 7pm on Sunday.
Police were called but they have been unable to find the driver and are asking anyone with information to get in touch.
Reports first emerged on social media, with many people speculating that the motorist involved may have been confused by the Lochgelly slip road exit in the dark.
Facebook user David Green noted the driver had travelled along the central reservation for miles.
“Getting confused is driving 50 yards down the wrong slip road, not going the wrong way at speed past hundreds of vehicles going the wrong way,” he said.
The A92 in Fife has long been regarded as an accident blackspot and the Lochgelly to Cowdenbeath stretch was the scene of a tragedy just last month.
A 63-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after a collision involving one vehicle on the westbound carriageway of the main road near the Lochgelly junction.
Two children and a baby needed hospital treatment.
A man in his 20s died on the A92, between the Bankhead and Redhouse roundabouts, in August.
The footage from Sunday night is reminiscent of a similar incident in June 2016 when a 29-year-old woman died in a horror smash on the M90 near Rosyth which left three others and two young children in hospital.
An elderly driver was hospitalised after a crash on the M90 in March last year when their silver saloon was seen heading the wrong way down the northbound side of the motorway near Bridge of Earn.
Video on that occasion showed some drivers narrowly escaped being involved in a crash before the car ploughed into oncoming vehicles.
Anyone with infornation on the latest incident is urged to call the police on 101.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.55pm on Sunday, October 11, 2020, we received reports of a car driving in the wrong direction on the A92 between Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly.
“Officers attended and searched the area but there was no trace of the car.”
