Prince Charles will inspect a new warship which bears his name on a visit to Rosyth.

The tour of the under construction HMS Prince of Wales on Tuesday is one of a series of engagements by the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.

The royal couple will arrive in Perth in the morning and will be welcomed by the Perth and Kinross Lord Lieutenant Brigadier Mel Jameson.

“We are looking forward to the visit,” said Mr Jameson.

“It has been a long time in the planning and it is not that long ago that he visited The Black Watch at Balhousie Castle to open the new museum.

“This visit to Perth puts us on the map,  he will arrive on the royal train and will be welcomed by a piper.

“Here is a man dealing with the affairs of state and still has the time to spend on smaller things, we are thrilled by the visit.”

Following a visit to a local manufacturing business the Duke and Duchess will visit the Abbeyfield Viewlands House Care Home in Perth to meet with staff and residents including  several old servicemen.

Abbeyfield, a charity which encourages residents of their homes to remain as independent as possible in a secure environment, is a cause Prince Charles has long supported.

He has been patron of the Abbeyfield Society since 1979 and previously visited the Perth home in 1988.

It is then on to Rosyth where Prince Charles will carry out a ceremony marking an important stage in the construction of the HMS Prince of Wales, one of the most powerful warships ever built for the Royal Navy.

Around 100 Babcock employees and the ship’s company will see the royal visitor strike a gavel which will result in the placing of the final 570 tonne structural piece of the ship into the flight deck.

The ship is a 65,000 tonne aircraft carrier which will be deployed around the globe including providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

Later in the day the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay will attend an exhibition in the capital which is part of Edinburgh International Festival.

The royal couple will remain in Scotland for the remainder of the week carrying out official engagements.
