Police have launched an investigation after a man was seriously injured outside a St Andrews takeaway at the weekend.
The 20-year-old was punched on the head and body by a man he had been talking to after leaving a nearby pub with friends.
Officers are appealing for witnesses to the attack, which happened outside the Dervish takeaway on Bell Street at around 2.20am on Sunday.
The victim had been out with friends and was leaving the Vic bar in St Mary’s Place when he was engaged in conversation with an unknown man.
Police say the situation escalated into an argument, which led to the group walking away from the man and heading towards the takeaway.
A short time later the suspect reappeared with several others and he assaulted the victim by punching him in the head and body before making off.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital in Kirkcaldy for treatment.
Local officers are carrying out inquiries in a bid to trace the suspect and have asked for the public’s help.
He is described as being of slim build and having a pale complexion.
He was 5ft 4in tall and was wearing a baseball cap backwards, skinny jeans and a zipped hoodie.
Detective Sergeant Paula Warrender of Levenmouth CID said: “I want to hear from anyone who recognises the description of the assailant or who witnessed this violent attack.
“Similarly, anyone who had been within the Vic bar around the time of this incident and who has information relevant to our ongoing investigation is asked to contact police immediately.”
