A murder inquiry has been launched after a St Andrews woman died in hospital.

Elizabeth Bowe, 50, died in hospital around noon on Tuesday following an altercation in the Fife town on Saturday night.

Following the disturbance, Ms Bowe’s brother, Charles Gordon, was charged with attempted murder.

He appeared in court on Monday.

Ms Bowe had been found with serious injuries within a property in Bobby Jones Place.

She was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where she was pronounced dead yesterday at around noon.

Gordon, 51, also of St Andrews, appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Monday charged with her attempted murder, and behaving in a threatening and abusive manner likely to cause fear or alarm.

He made no plea or declaration during his brief private court appearance and had his case continued for further examination.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear back at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court within the next eight days.

Detective Inspector Rory Hamilton, from Police Scotland, said: “This is a tragic loss and our thoughts and condolences are with Elizabeth’s loved ones.

“This investigation is now being treated as a murder inquiry and it will continue to be led by detectives from the Major Investigations Team.

“Anyone with information that can assist our enquiries is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.”

Ms Bowe is understood to have lived in her flat in Bobby Jones Place for almost a year after being rehoused there from the Levenmouth area.

She was discovered by local officers within her flat at around 9pm on Saturday.

After Saturday’s incident, police officers and forensic teams were reportedly in and out of the property throughout Sunday and Monday as investigations into what happened continued.

Neighbours suggested that police were frequently called to the property due to anti-social behaviour and noise complaints.
