Security around the Suffolk air base where Fife serviceman Corrie McKeague is based has been heavily ramped up as a result of his disappearance.
Dunfermline airman Corrie hasn’t been seen since the early hours of Saturday September 24 following a night out with friends in Bury St Edmunds.
The Courier visited RAF Honington, located 10 miles north of the town, home to servicemen and women from throughout the country.
The base is located next to residential housing, where neighbours admitted the atmosphere in the small town is “raw”.
Security around the base itself has been heightened. Armed guards stand on patrol next to a check in point.
Notices and signs can be seen warning staff of a heightened threat level and of Corrie’s disappearance.
A reminder to staff to ensure their RAF identity badges are removed from sight is also on display when exiting the base.
The Courier told earlier this week how the area has united to try to find the 23-year-old.
Dozens of leaflets are on show notifying members of the public of the disappearance.
Police have been conducting daily searches with volunteers, RAF police and a helicopter.
So far however no positive sighting has been recorded.
On Thursday, Corrie’s mother Nicola Urquhart said she was pleased with the efforts that have taken place.
She added: “There is still a lot of work to do.”
Honington resident Steven Ainsworth said that the lack of clarity over Corrie’s disappearance is upsetting locals.
The father admitted “the hairs on the back of his neck stand up” when he thinks about the disappearance.
