A cyclist has died almost a fortnight after being struck by a car in Kirkcaldy.

Gary Christie, 38, of Cupar, was seriously injured in the collision in Carberry Road on November 1.

He was fighting for his life in hospital but it is understood the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support machine was made on Monday.

Mr Christie passed away at the Western General in Edinburgh at around 4.15pm on Monday.

In a statement issued through Police Scotland, Mr Christie’s family said:  “Gary was a loving and devoted father to his two sons, Lewis and Ryan.

“He always put others first and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

“The family would like to thank staff at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy and the Western General, Edinburgh.”

Police Sergeant James Henry, of Fife Division’s Road Policing Unit, said:  “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Gary’s family.

“We are still investigating this collision and would ask that anyone with information contact us as soon as possible.”

The driver of the red Vauxhall Corsa involved in the crash, which occurred shortly before 7am, was shaken but unhurt.

The road was closed north of the junction with Carberry Place for several hours as a police investigation was conducted, and an appeal issued for witnesses.

Mr Christie had been initially rushed to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy but was later transferred to Edinburgh for specialist treatment.

Those with information about the accident can contact Police Scotland on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
