A mother was seriously injured and her two children hurt as a family’s festive night out ended in disaster.

Their car was involved in a head-on smash with another car near Cupar as they travelled home from a Christmas concert.

The mum and a woman in the other car were trapped when the vehicles collided on the A914 just before 10.20pm on Friday.

Both were cut free by firefighters and the woman and her children, who were in a black Vauxhall Corsa, were treated at the scene by paramedics, doctors and a trauma team before they were rushed to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

The other woman, who was in a red Renault Scenic, was unhurt.

The husband of the injured woman said on Saturday afternoon that his children, one of whom suffered a fractured bone, were awaiting discharge from hospital.

His wife was more seriously hurt, having sustained head injuries, a lacerated kidney, broken arm and broken pelvis.

He shared news of the accident on Facebook and added: “Thanks for everyone’s messages of support for the family.”

Fuel was spilled in the smash near Tarvit Mill, which saw the road between Cupar and Springfield closed for more than eight hours.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called to a collision on the A914 just before 10.20pm.

“A woman sustained serious injuries and two children minor injuries.

“They were all taken to Ninewells Hospital.”

Issuing an appeal for information, he said: “Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call from the Scottish Ambulance Service at 2217 hours to reports of a road traffic collision.

“Appliances from Glenrothes were mobilised and on arrival a further appliance from Methil was mobilised.

“The collision involved two cars with one female adult trapped in each.”

“Hydraulic cutting gear was used on both cars to removed the roof on one car and partially [remove the roof] on the other.”
