A major planning application that could see 1,650 houses built on the outskirts of Levenmouth has been lodged with Fife Council.

The proposal by Wemyss Estates also includes a primary school, community centre and play and sports facilities.

If approved, the work would be carried out over 10 years on farmland off Percival Road in Buckhaven.

And, once finished, it will be bigger than the huge Kingslaw Gait development at Randolph in Kirkcaldy.

The community will be consulted on the plan at the end of this month.

Levenmouth Councillor Ken Caldwell described it as “an exciting opportunity for the area.”

He said: “I fully welcome this plan and hopefully it will help to regenerate the area.”

Similar to Kingslaw development in Kirkcaldy

The application site borders Percival Road on one side, spanning the A915 Standing Stane Road and along to Methilhill.

And it stretches beyond Levenmouth Academy and down as far as the police station on Sea Road.

Councillor Ken Caldwell welcomes plans for the Levenmouth housing development.

The land has long been seen as key to the area’s future and is zoned for housing, employment and education in the local plan.

Any development would rely on the private sector but would include a proportion of affordable homes.

Mr Caldwell said the development, alongside the opening of the new Levenmouth rail link, was a positive step.

“It’s a 10 year plan and I’m hoping it will encourage builders to come here,” he said.

“It’s similar to the development in Kirkcaldy, with 1,650 houses proposed over the next decade.”

Public consultation events

Levenmouth suffers from a shortage of housing and is crying out for investment, the SNP councillor added.

“We’re looking for areas to build,” he said.

“The plan also includes a primary school and some shops. If a developer shows confidence in the area then we can build on that confidence.

“That in itself will hopefully help to regenerate the area by bringing in new families who will spend in local shops etc.

Two public consultation events will be organised to present more details.

The first will take place at Buckhaven Community Centre on October 27, from 4pm to 8pm.

However, the second has yet to be arranged.
