A major search for a puppy who went missing after being involved in a Fife car crash has had a happy ending.

Little Oscar disappeared after bolting from the wreck of his owner’s vehicle following the accident on the road between Auchmuirbridge and Ballingry on Saturday afternoon.

The 11-month-old’s worried family spent almost 24 hours searching for their beloved pet in the harsh terrain which is made up of bracken, woodlands and farmland.

An appeal to find the Jack Russell cross Westie went viral on social media and the family’s efforts were rewarded at around 5pm on Sunday.

A member of the public spotted the soaking wet youngster at a car park in nearby Scotlandwell before he was reunited with his emotional family.

Ann McGregor, whose daughter Debbie owns the dog, said: “He’s very wet and tired. He was in Scotlandwell which is quite a distance for him to travel.

“The person who found him said he saw him in the carpark and he just grabbed him. I can’t thank everyone enough for their help. They’ve all been amazing.

“Debbie burst into tears when she saw him. She’s ecstatic. We’ll check him out when we get him home to see if he’s hurt or anything but he seems to be fine.”

Oscar was found after a 24 hour search.

There were initial fears that the puppy may have been injured in the collision after all the airbags deployed and the windows on his side of the car smashed.

Despite being in a harness, he managed to break free and disappeared at around 5.30pm.

Ann, who lives in Glenrothes, added: “If he travelled that distance, I think he’s probably not been hurt in the crash.”

Daughter Debbie, 21, who was driving the vehicle was left “battered and bruised” following the accident which is thought to have been caused by a slippery road surface.

Despite suffering from broken ribs and only being released from the hospital late on Saturday night, the devoted owner was out searching for Oscar at 6am the following day.

Local animal group Dana’s Angels, who reunite lost pets with the owners, also helped in the search for Oscar and used thermal imaging cameras to try and find him.
