Questions about the death of a former St Andrews schoolboy after he took magic mushrooms remain unanswered.
French student Antoine Maury, 20, disappeared in October 2016 and his body was found at Duddingston Loch, Edinburgh, two months later. A post-mortem found the hallucinogen in his system.
His mother Laura Vesterinen-Maury has been refused information she requested from Police Scotland which she believed would shed light on the final hours before his death.
Antoine, was a pupil at St Leonards School in St Andrews, before studying at Edinburgh College.
Laura believes he had been offered mushrooms on the day he went missing and refused due to a bad reaction previously.
At Edinburgh Sheriff Court in November 2017, a fellow student, Scott Mckerral, of Campbeltown, in Argyll, admitted supplying magic mushrooms to Antoine and others.
Laura told the Daily Record she needed to better understand the circumstances of her son’s death.
She said: “I think the only way for me to understand is to see the police investigation files.
“I cannot understand why this can be refused so easily without specific reasons when the case is closed.”
Police Scotland refused her request, made under freedom of information legislation, for information from Antoine’s phone.
Chief Inspector Kevin McLean said: “Unfortunately, such information cannot be provided for a range of operational reasons and data protection matters, which were outlined in a letter of response.”
