A Fife mother-to-be lost her unborn twins when her partner tried to murder her.

Lisa Donaldson was 32 weeks pregnant when Stephen Ramsay, 35, punched and throttled her and stabbed her in the neck.

Police kicked down the front door of the couple’s home in Glenrothes after a neighbour dialled 999 and found Ramsay straddling Ms Donaldson, who was bleeding from the throat.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard she suffered two cardiac arrests in the ambulance on the way to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy and was given CPR by police and ambulance staff.

Advocate depute Derick Nelson said: “The officers observed the complainer was heavily pregnant and appeared to have had her throat cut, with blood spurting every time she tried to breathe.”

The twins were delivered by caesarian section in a battle to save her life, but both died after being deprived of blood in the womb.

The court heard that when Ramsay was later told the unborn babies had died, he said: “I’ve murdered my kids.

“I don’t deserve to be treated. I deserve to die, just kill me now.”

The prosecutor said medical opinion was the unborn children died following a collapse in the mother’s circulation as a result of which they were deprived of sufficient blood supply during the assault.

During an interview he claimed to have no recollection of the attack.

He admitted attempted murder on February 23 this year, knowing that she was 32 weeks pregnant with twins.

The judge, Lord Kinclaven, deferred sentence for reports and remanded him in custody.

He is due to appear next at the High Court in Aberdeen on July 5.
