Sporting stars lined up to share the success of Angus youngsters in their online annual awards ceremony.

Despite the pandemic putting paid to the Webster’s High School event in Kirriemuir, organisers managed to secure the involvement of Olympians and internationalists to hand out the gongs in the virtual ceremony.

They included Webster’s alumni Scott McKenna, the Aberdeen FC and Scotland defender, and international rowers Sam Scrimgeour and Robyn Hart-Winks.

Tayside middle-distance runner Eilish McColgan, Scotland rugby international Zander Fagerson, Scotland football captain Rachel Corsie and para triathlete Lauren Steadman were among others who contributed.

Webster’s PE teacher Craig Lawson and Kirrie cluster Angus active schools co-ordinator Magnus Moncrieff made contact with the stellar presenting panel for the social media event, and thanked Thrums Vets in Kirriemuir and Webster’s High School Parent Council for their contribution to the awards.

Main award winners were: Team of the Year – S2 Giant Heptathlon; Young Volunteers – Lauren Adams, Rachel Allan, Megan Beattie, Catriona Boath and Alana Soutar; Volunteer of the Year – Ciara Roulston and Lifetime Achievement – Christie Phillips.

World champion rower Sam Scrimgeour, who had been due to visit the school for the awards, announced Ciara Roulston as Sports Personality of the Year for her para-triathlon achievements.

Sam, 32, a World and European champion rower said: “It’s great to see so many nominations in so many different sports.

“We’re in pretty peculiar times which have brought some new challenges for sport, and the uncertainty continues.

“Some of my friends have been building towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and have had a whole year added to what has already been a long journey, and we still don’t know if the Olympics will go ahead and, if so, in what form,” he added.

“But one thing I can say for certain is that sport and exercise help us to stay fit and healthy, not just physically but mentally too.”
