An Angus firm at the centre of a fatal employee accident has been charged over the tragedy.

Andrew Fraser died in a Montrose industrial estate after he was struck by machinery almost two years ago.

The 26-year-old Gemini Corrosion Services employee was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in September 2014 but succumbed to his injuries.

The firm is being prosecuted on indictment after police and the Health and Safety Executive investigated the accident, which took place at its 10-acre premises in Brent Avenue.

Representatives are expected to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Mr Fraser from Arbroath, who was known as Andy, was employed as a semi-skilled worker at Gemini for more than a year and worked on a number of operations at the firm.

He came into contact with a rotating pipe on a thermal sprayer used to coat surfaces with aluminium.

At the time of the incident, managing director Ian Guthrie described Mr Fraser’s death as his “darkest day”.

“It was a terrible accident and our thoughts go out to his family,” he said.

“When you go to work in the morning, you expect to come back home again.

“I’ve run this company for 32 years and this has been my darkest day.

“Andy was a really nice guy, who was very popular with his workmates.

“I actually interviewed Andy myself and I was very impressed by him.

“He used to work in Morrisons and was looking for a career change.

“He was a great choice for the job.

“He came into the role and applied himself very well.

“His supervisors said if we had a few more workers like him we would be fine.

“Everybody is absolutely devastated and completely traumatised by what happened.

“It is difficult to put into words.

“I have been in the business for more than 30 years and I’ve never experienced anything like this.”

Scotland’s charity air ambulance was scrambled along with the Tayside trauma team when the alarm was raised at the anti-corrosion firm at around 3.40pm, and paramedics assisted the trauma team at the scene.

The man was transferred in an ambulance under police escort to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where he died.

Now employing around 30 staff, Gemini was initially based in a small unit at Spurryhillock Industrial Estate, Stonehaven, and commissioned the construction of a larger facility at Montrose in 1999.
