A new Angus councillor will be announced on Tuesday after constituents in Arbroath East and Lunan went to the polls.
The local authority announced a by-election for the single seat vacated by outgoing councillor Bob Spink, after his retirement on health grounds in September.
Six hopefuls put their names forward for his seat – Brenda Durno (Scottish National Party), Richard Moore (Scottish Liberal Democrats), John Ruddy (Scottish Labour), Kevin Smith (Independent), Lois Speed (Independent), and Derek Wann (Scottish Conservatives).
The winner by single transferable vote will be declared following the count at Angus House in Forfar after polling closed at 10pm on Monday.
Mr Spink was first elected as an independent for the former Hayshead and Lunan ward in 2003, and was re-elected to this ward under proportional representation in 2007, along with two SNP candidates and a Conservative.
There was no change to the party representation at the next council election in 2012 with the SNP polling 44% of first preferences, to 26% for Mr Spink and 15% for the Conservatives.
Ahead of the polls, SNP candidate Brenda Durno said she was keen to enhance the role of social enterprises and voluntary enterprises in the community.
Richard Moore, for the Scottish Liberal Democrats, said he wants rural and urban residents to be treated the same.
John Ruddy of Scottish Labour said he would think of “new ways” to help deal with shrinking financial settlements to the council.
Independent Kevin Smith said he relaunched the community council and became chairman, in the hope of giving power back to the people.
Independent candidate Lois Speed said she wanted to guarantee local voices are heard before decisions are made.
And Derek Wann of the Scottish Conservatives said he had successfully campaigned against shops selling so-called “legal highs” in Angus and fought the closure of Arbroath Sheriff Court.
