A baby is fighting for her life in hospital after being critically injured in Arbroath.

The six-month-old girl was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, before being transferred to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

Police said the infant’s injuries were being treated as unexplained.

Neighbours reported seeing a large police presence in St Vigeans Road on Saturday.

Officers remained on guard outside the front and back door of a house in the street on Monday.

It is understood a couple in their 20s live in the property.

Curtains remained closed at the terraced house on Monday and neighbours spoke of their shock and upset.

Shirley Spink, 59, said: “I hope and pray that she is going to be okay.

“You don’t expect things like that to happen in a town like Arbroath and next door to you.”

Arbroath East and Lunan Independent councillor Lois Speed said: “My thoughts and prayers are with the baby and family at this critical time.

“I have first hand experience of Edinburgh Sick Kids and she is in the best possible hands.”

Detective Inspector Ray Birnie said: “The child is in a critical condition in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

“Inquiries are at an early stage.”

Police were out in force in St Vigeans Road and Cairnie Loan on Saturday.

Officers could be seen searching back gardens.

Police said they were part of a joint investigation being carried out with health and council officials.

A spokesman said: “A six-month-old female child is in a critical condition in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

“The serious injuries she has sustained are as yet unexplained.

“The investigation is being carried out in joint partnership with Angus Council Social Work Department and the NHS.

“As part of this investigation, there will be a police presence in St Vigeans Road, Arbroath.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman added: “We dispatched one ambulance to the scene.

“We transported one infant to Ninewells Hospital and the patient was then transferred to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.”
