Adjournment in £35k Angus youth establishment embezzlement case

The former chief executive of a youth facility in Montrose who has denied embezzling almost £35,000 over six years appeared in court on Tuesday.

Richard Murray, 54, of Courthillock Gardens, Kirriemuir, appeared before Sheriff Gregor Murray  at Forfar.

The court heard the case was a “complex matter” with Murray’s agent asking for an adjournment.

Murray had earlier pled not guilty by letter in relation to a single charge that between April 1 2008 and July 31 2014, at Rossie, his Kirriemuir home and elsewhere unknown, while chief executive officer of Rossie Young Peoples Trust, he embezzled £34,495.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said: “There are a number of documents being produced for the Crown which have not been given to us at this stage.

“It’s rather complex and we are trying to follow procedures. There is quite a large number of documents coming up in due course.

“They have been tendered with the police. I am unsure where the police have held them, they have been seized and added to the production list.”

Sheriff  Murray told the accused: “I will try to fix some kind of appropriate procedure and make sure it is not unduly delayed.”

He adjourned the case and a notional trial diet was set for June 25 to allow the relevant documents to be produced.

Murray was excused from attending on that date, a  trial date in June having been set at an earlier hearing.
