Montrose Football Club’s first league title in 33 years prompted a teenage supporter to go on an all-day bender that landed him in a police cell.
Police were called after a member of the public saw Cameron Peggie punching lampposts in the town on the morning after the club’s League Two victory.
Officers found the 19-year-old to be highly intoxicated and behaving erratically.
Depute fiscal Stewart Duncan told Forfar Sheriff Court police initially intended to transport Peggie to his mother’s house in Garrison Road, Montrose.
However, repeated threats of violence led to the arrest of the Gable Endies fan.
The depute fiscal said: “When officers traced the accused at 10.20am he was found to be under the influence and acting erratically.
“The accused repeatedly said he wanted to fight someone and that he wanted to hit someone. More officers attended at 10.50am and he was going to be taken to his mother’s house.
“During the journey his behaviour deteriorated and he started to headbutt the cage, shout and swear and repeatedly threaten to stab somebody.
“At his mother’s house, the accused told police that if he was to be left with his mother he would run away, start drinking again and batter someone. On account of his prolonged threatening behaviour, he was arrested.”
Cameron Peggie, of Garrison Road, admitted a charge that on April 29 in Wirren Street and Garrison Road he caused fear or alarm by repeatedly shouting and swearing and uttering threats of violence.
Addressing Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown defence agent Nick Markowski, said: “I don’t know if it’s in judicial knowledge but Saturday April 28 was the day Montrose won the league title for the first time in 33 years.
“My client started drinking at 11am on Saturday. This was only interrupted to go to the football and afterwards he ended up at a party and continued to drink.
“He pled guilty from the outset of the case and spent some time in custody when he should have been celebrating with his friends.
“He apologises to the court for his behaviour.”
The sheriff placed Peggie on a community payback order for six months.
