A sheriff has slammed a domestic abuser for his “absolutely unconscionable” behaviour in a row about Christmas which led to him smashing a television and threatening to “kick off” if his partner called police.
John Mundy, 38, of Fox Street, Carnoustie, appeared for sentence before Sheriff Gregor Murray at Forfar having previously admitted shouting, swearing and acting aggressively towards his partner at their home on December 19, and making threats of violence.
Depute fiscal Laura McGillvery told the court an argument over an iPod had broken out during the afternoon, which spilled over again later.
“He lifted his right hand to hit her, but stopped before he made contact,” she said.
Mundy then grabbed the bedroom TV and threw it to the floor, causing it to smash.
He told the woman: “You better not phone the police, they better not come or I’ll
kick off.”
He ran off but was soon arrested.
Solicitor Brian Bell said: “What might save him from jail is that he has not behaved like this in the past, but the seriousness of the incident is not lost on him.
“They are continuing to live together and are trying to work through this.”
Deferring sentence until September, Sheriff Murray told Mundy: “Your behaviour was utterly appalling.
“What I propose to do in due course is to make you carry out an awful lot of unpaid work as an alternative to custody.
“That is not appropriate yet and I will defer sentence for six months for you to prepare.”
