Anti-fascists in Dundee have covered up an “act of hatred” after a mural to George Floyd had white supremacist markings daubed on it.

As reported in the Evening Telegraph, a tribute to George Floyd —whose death while in police custody has sparked protests across America — by Dundee graffiti artist Symon Mathieson was covered over by what appears to be a Celtic Cross, which is used by some white supremacists.

The vandals also covered up the word black lives matter.

How the George Floyd mural looked before being defaced. Within a matter of days it was defaced with a fascist symbol.

In response, members of Anti-fascist Action Dundee went to the Hilltown site to remove evidence of fascist symbolism on the mural.

They reinserted the word black and covered the cross with an antifascist emblem.

A statement from the group said: “Black lives matter. The defacing of the portrait of George Floyd was a deliberate act of hatred and ignorance.

The words “Black Lives Matter” have now been reinstated at the Dundee mural.

“We as a community should not tolerate racism in any form, especially from fascists.

“We will not let you spread your hate in our community. We stand in solidarity with those in our community and our siblings around the world hurt by racism every day.

“We hope whichever fascist scumbag painted this knows it barely lasted.”

Police Scotland said they have received no reports in relation to the matter.
