A man has died after falling from the Tay Road Bridge this morning.
He was plucked from the water by lifeboat crewmen after a search of the river and rushed to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital.
Police Scotland, Coastguard and the RNLI were all involved in the search operation which was sparked at around 7.30am.
Reports of a man in the water saw both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats scrambled from the Broughty Ferry Lifeboat Station.
The man was spotted floating on his back near to the docks at Dundee a short time later in an unconscious state.
He was rushed to the lifeboat station while lifeboat crewmen performed CPR in an effort to rouse him.
Once there, he was transferred to waiting paramedics at Broughty Ferry, who continued to make lifesaving efforts as he was rushed to Ninewells Hospital.
Sadly, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
It’s understood that family members had raised concerns about the man’s mental state.
The Tay Bridge had to be closed for a time while the emergency operation took place.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “A man was recovered from the River Tay following an incident at the Tay Road Bridge, Dundee at about 7.30am this morning.
“Despite attempts by the emergency services, the man sadly died.
“He had been recovered from the water by the RNLI and Coastguard.
“As with all sudden deaths a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
Next of kin are being informed.
The coastguard said both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats had been involved in the operation, together with Coastguard crews from Carnoustie and St Andrews.
