Video: Luminous Birds to light up Dundee’s historic Howff

The Howff in Dundee will be lit up by hundreds of mechanical birds as part of an extraordinary art project starting this week.

Composer and sonic and visual artist Kathy Hinde is bringing her sounds and light installation Luminous Birds to Dundee.

It features hundreds of hand-made mechanical birds lighting up the night sky.

The event has been arranged as part of Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design and will run in Dundee from September 12 to November 19.

Luminous Birds is intended to encourage members of the public, from commuters to night owls winding their way home, to look up and appreciate their day-to-day environment.

The birds have bee constructed from paper, plastic and metal and use synchronised lighting and sounds to create the effect of birds flying overhead.

Together, the exhibition recreates the phenomena of birds flocking together.

Kathy said: “I’m particularly excited about showing Luminous Birds in Scotland during the autumn because many birds will be on their migration passage at the time, with huge flocks of Barnacle Geese resting near Dumfries and Pink Footed Geese north near Dundee.

“I want to create the effect of birds flying just above people’s heads, through alleys and lanes right in the heart of towns and cities, highlighting some of the many beautiful aspects of bird flight, through light and sound.”

Malcolm Roughead, chief executive of VisitScotland, added: “Scotland is world-renowned for its rich built heritage; it has buildings that make people look up, streets steeped in history and vibrant public spaces which promote its distinctive identity all over the world.

“Combining technology with nature, Kathy Hinde’s Luminous Birds is a wonderfully innovative and thought-provoking way to shine the spotlight on some of our greatest assets and icons, as well as our hidden gens during the 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.”

The event is free to view after dark each night.

Dundee has played a starring role in the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

As well as Luminous Brids, the city hosted the People’s Tower project in May to recreate the Royal Arch.

It has also welcomed the Ideal Hut Show and will host the finale of the festival in November, to coincide with Dundee’s own Christmas night light celebrations.
